girlfriends reliquary and a charming wish

i did not get to spend the time in my studio today like i wanted.  the peri-menopausal pms insisted we stayed curled up in bed whining about feeling crappy.

so i made a deal with the pms...we go downstairs to the studio and if i did not feel better we could come back upstairs and curl back up in a ball for the rest of the day.  neener neener i did not feel all that much better but i stayed put and played anyway.

yesterday i had cut the paper linings to the 5 future reliquary boxes, today i secured them, and i made sure it was corner to corner this time, with double sided tape.  believe it or not that took a bit of time and was sooooo boring, even with something good to watch on my ancient tiny tv that i am so thankful for.

once they were done i realized i had no idea what i was going to put in them.  yipes!  i wandered the studio searching for ideas and things to put in these little boxes of happiness.  i put wee little farm animals in them, the little yellow pipe cleaner easter chicks....have you ever noticed that only 1 out of an entire box of those chicks has their face on straight and not all smooshed and off to the side?

i then remembered i had a ton of vintage plastic baby dolls.  for a bit i played with them trying to figure out how i wanted them positioned.  i decided on this.....

don't they have the sweetest faces?!   makes me think of that special person a girl has in her life that she can confide in and know their secret was safe.

i also used 2 vintage postage stamps in the box for a bit of color.

the hardest part is waiting.  i had to e6000 the dolls together, wait for them to dry enough to then glue to the bottom of the box.  if i solder it too soon then the glue may not be set enough or the condensation that builds up inside during soldering sometimes could cause some real messy problems.

  patience, patience, patience.

i am a patient person when it comes to many things, but not in the studio.  today's project is not just art, but a test in patience and i am gonna pass.  it is now 11:45 p.m. and i have not run back down to my studio to begin soldering.  i am being a big girl and waiting until tomorrow to give the e6000 plenty of time to dry.

after gluing the girls in the box i cut some glass to solder a separate stamp charm for the reliquary necklace.

i have also been in the backyard collecting some of these.......

probably should have cropped this photo, but the pms said ppppbbbbbtttt to that.  it is a clear cup with dandelion blowy things in it,  up against my belly.

i used them to make a couple of these.......

it still needs to be soldered.  i figured i would just make tomorrow a soldering day.  i am also going to put a few more of these together....i figured my baby girl would love it, and she did.  i would love to make several to keep on hand.   everyone needs to make a wish now and then.

the 'little' dog that i posted about last night is back safe with her owners.  we found out she is a shiba inu.  the photo i took of her last night being loved on by the hubby

was a very slimming and flattering photo.  i bet she weighed at least 60 pounds....and those 60 pounds were stuffed in a fur made for half that.  kind of makes me sad.....the reason her eyes looked so tiny is because she is mostly blind.

she is also going deaf....maybe that is why she and i communicated so well? !

her owner told me she gets out all the time, but she makes her way home.....the dog was in the middle of the road late at night and she is nearly blind and deaf......i think it is time to fence in the yard buddy.  my son's friends say that their dogs get out all the time and we should not ever bother picking her up again.

i better run, i just realized i have a load of laundry i need to do before tomorrow morning.

hope something wonderful happened to you today.

lots of love....mwah!

do-dadding up papier mache easter eggs

finally i am back...what ever crud i had kicked this arty girls butt in a big way and made the beast (meniere's vertigo for those who are new here) cranky.  but i am back.

i still need to finish the other bunny necklace, but i really wanted to work on something easter-y today.  i really don't have many decorations for easter.  i dunno why.

and yes, the bunny necklace is easter-y....but i just didn't wanna work on it....ok already?

what vintage decorations  i have i loves......

these bunnies were made with my mom.  16 years ago we were going to get into the craft business, but i had a newborn at the time and it just never....happened.  probably a good thing because when sewing these i wanted to jab the scissors in to my body repeatedly....i just can not do repetition.

and i just hadda put my bunny ears that my daughter recently gave me to good use.

the big bunny is just a few years old...i bought it from at a craft fair a few years back.  to the right is an art doll i made a few years ago....and yes she does have ninnies...... made from polymer clay.

so i am pretty puny in the decorations department for this holiday.  a few weeks ago when cleaning my studio i came across 4 large and 9 small papier mache eggs.   the other night i came up with an idea for the small ones....and i have to say they turned out just like i imagined them!  squeeeeee!

i decided to work upstairs in the kitchen because (a)  i did not have enough open space on any of the tables in my studio and (b) the weather started out beautiful and i thought it would be great for snapping photos of the creative process.  the weather quickly changed from sunny to cloudy and rainy then back to sunny then back to rainy...and the photos reflect it.

since i did not have enough acrylic paint, i 'borrowed' from our trim stash of creamy off white latex paint.

and because i am an a1 slob when it comes to painting i made sure the entire kitchen table was covered.  i also wore a junky shirt because the inner kindergartener in me,  still, without thinking, wipes her fingers on her shirt.

i  wore rubber glubs, because i just did my nails the night before and did not want to ruin these beauties.  normally i do not paint my nails very often, and normally my hands are stained with some arty medium.   my daughter found matte polish for me.....loving the matte nail polish, and loving that the sparklies stay sparklyyyyyy.....ok...so where were we......

the 'before' photo....

i wanted the eggs to look antique and well loved.  i played with a couple of different methods of removing just the right amount of paint.

this one i  painted a light coat of paint and then held the egg for a few minutes.  when i removed my hand it took some of the paint off with it.

the other method was rolling the egg when the paint was slightly tacky on newspaper.  it actually ended up working out best when i crumpled the paper up and then wrapped the egg up in it and removed it.

a sampling of eggs done both ways....

next step, i stamped them.

to get a bit of exercise in, i took 3 eggs down to my basement studio at a time.

i love, love, love these.   i remember a bit ago that i have a vintage wire egg basket and i may just transfer them in to that and keep them in the kitchen after easter.

for the large eggs i decided to try something that has been pinned on pinterest on several occasions.  using elmers glue as a crackle medium.

even before my hubby lost his job 10 months ago i cringed at the cost of the different crackle paints and mediums out there.  well now there is just no way, so needless to say this girl was as happy as i  could possibly be when i saw the tute on pinterst.

only problem was i did not have enough elmers wood glue, and no white glue...but i had this

this stuff is a bit more pricey than good old elmers, but mixed with a bit of water to give it the consistancy of elmers it worked just fine.    i am a now now now instant gratification kind of girl....ants in my pants kind of girl so there was going to be no waiting until later in the evening to get some elmers.

the first egg i did not basecoat.  the other 3 i gave basecoat in pink, green, and purple.

i put the glue on with a sponge brush, and gave it a pretty gloppy thick coat....

you need to let the glue dry just enough so that it is tacky, or sticky.  i found that just dry enough was when you could touch it and it would hold your finger print there.  you then want to load your brush with enough paint to make one long stroke if possible.  make sure you paint in one direction, as in from top to bottom of your project.  do not put the paint on too thick, and do not go back and add more paint...unless it is immediate.  the link for the elmers tute is here .

being that instant gratification kinda girl i grabbed the space heater and used it to speed up the process.

there is one drawback to using this cheater-cheater method

nope, my easter egg did not develope a zit.  but you do need to pop it.....ewww gross.  sorry.

it is a poofy bubble of air due to the glue and paint becoming a bit too warm.   who knows...maybe if i was to do it even longer it might've burst in to flames....so....if you are antsy like me and choose to use heat to speed up the processing of all of this be careful.

i still have more schtuff to do to these guys, and should have them done by tomorrow.  i will post pics when i am done, and the pics will be better.

while digging for these eggs in a super huge plastic tub o'stuff i came across about 20 or so of these.  most still unpainted.

cute little buggers aren't they?!  i had forgotten all about them!  so like i said...most still need to be painted.  remember....i am not much of a repetition type of a person.  i figure i will start on them in july or august to put in the nest feathers shop.

i am self taught at everything i do.  i saw the snowman face on a painting magazine for ghosts and adapted it.

i am so thankful for donna dewberry.  that woman knows how to teach some painting.  her books are just perfect for someone like me.  learning disabilities and blonde, and i tend to over complicate things...all handicaps!  *snort*

i am still so proud of what i painted on our 1930's  kitchen table...so proud i'm just gonna show it off again!

well...that is pretty much all the show-n-tell for now.   if all goes as planned i will be back tomorrow to show off the finished bits of the crackle eggs.

sloppy smooches and squishy hugs to you....

take that blah monster...this arty girl is back

it has been a long couple of years, but the last 5 months have been intense to say the least.

a couple of years ago i would not have made it 5 weeks in, a couple years before that i would have been lucky to make it to 5 days.

this girl has been playing cheerleader to the peeps here at our home and being brave, and i think that no matter who you are and how strong you are...... there comes a point where even a brave girl has her moment   where she becomes vulnerable to the blah monster...'specially when the poo hit not just 'the fan'...but a room full of them.....and there was no dodging it.

so....... the blah monster got a good grip on me and held tight for a few weeks, but i  broke free and i am standing in faith once again that we are going to make it through this storm and be better than we were before.....and soon.

during my moment of utter and complete blah-ness i had the urge, stronger than when i was nesting during my baby making days, to clean and purge....the whole entire house.

normally when stressed i clean drawers, closets, and all the hidden places and spaces of my domain.  the laundry may back up, the dishes pile a mile high in the sink but this girl got clean drawers!

i am sure if i were to lay back on a therapists couch i would find that this enhanced and amplified nesting is a need to take control and symbolically clean up what ever mess i felt i was in the middle of.  this feels different, though, and it feels good to be getting rid of schtuff..... and the floors are mopped, toilets scrubbed, the dishes done, next weeks laundry is done.....

okayyyyyyy...with the ick out of the way now i can catch up on some of what went on here the last few weeks.

so, this cute little guy here, the one fast asleep with the pink veener dog toy.....

uh-dorable isn't he?

a couple of weeks ago i looked out in the back yard and noticed he was behaving in such a way that i knew in a mega instant that he was playing with a critter of some sort.

now, it was 1 in the afternoon.   i had just crawled outta bed.....this arty girl is part night owl and does not shut down until 4....5, 6, 7 in the morning.   i had major bed head, blanket crinkles and drool on my face, no bra, and the beast was misbehaving so i was walking like a drunk person trying to walk across a waterbed.  we have privacy fence, buuuuut the neighbors have decks and the neighbors on both sides of us were outside.   lovely.  just lovely.

mike refused to come when i called him cuz he knew mommy was gonna take his play mate away, which meant that the mommy had to come out after him in all my fresh-out-of-the-bed-glory.  again....lovely, just lovely.

let the chase begin.  thankfully i was able to grab michael.   clenched between his teeth was a soggy, drippy, and now dead playmate.

it was either a vole or baby possum.

i had michael by the scruff of his neck, and gave him a few gentle tough love shakes and told him to drop it and drop it now!

michael looked at me and i just knew what he was thinking....no way iz i spittn 'im out,  dis bees my toy not yours.  (i just know that is how he sounds...take my word for it)

with that he did what the gators and crocs do on the wild life shows when eating an antelope in one swallow....he did that flick of his head thing so that the vole/possum was not laying cross ways in his little mouth any longer, but now long ways.....then he swallowed it.....whole.

no way was that dog gonna lick me....evarrrr again.

everyone was so worried he was not going to be able to poop it out.   ewww. gross, right?

the loads of dryer sheets he steals seem to have made their way out, pistchio shells, and who knows what else...

everyday as everyone came home from work and school i was asked the same question......so did mike poop it out yet?

really?

why do even my own peeps think i have any desire, or time, to follow the dog around the backyard to see if he has pooped out his playmate.  really.   once my last baby was fully potty trained i gave up having to look at anyone or thing's poop.

about a week later we let mike have, play with and eat part of a mini pumpkin.    steph, my oldest and only daughter suddenly freaks and started to take it away from him fearing he might get sick from it.....really....he licks his butt daily and eats critters....whole.  i really doubt a mini pumpkin will do any more harm than his other activities do....sheesh.

halloween came and went....steph and a co-worker of hers dressed up as thing 1 and thing 2 for work and my youngest was a cowboy.

i am lucky i was even able to snap a quickie photo as steph was getting ready to drive max to his girlfriends house for some halloween fun......squuueeeeee i totally forgot to mention that max has a girlfriend, didn't i.  she is cute, and seems mentally well adjusted and normal....thank you Jesus for that!  Lord knows we have had our run of crazy girls between the two boys.

my smallest baby at birth, only 9 pounds 7 ounces, it now the biggest.  he is 6'2" at the moment.  next week who knows since he is in the middle of the whole puberty thing.

i finished my prototype art doll and am ready to finish up another to send to a swap friend.

these are quickie photos.

i am so in love with this.....and excited.  i am thinking about making one to sell on the nest feathers and twine shop.

this is a new wire wrapping thing i tried.  i had to figure it out by looking at another artists online.  i am hoping someday soon i can pick up a copy of the book that this technique is in.  the back is up here....and the front down there.....

last night i headed back downstairs to do some more studio purging and cleaning and realized i needed my storage tubs.

the storage tubs are outside awaiting a rinse down with the hose.

it was 30...40 something degrees and dark and windy.  the hose down is gonna have to wait until this weekend when the temps warm up a bit, so darn it i just had to play a little while doing a little tidying.

i took some of the skulls i had sculpted from polymer a few weeks ago....

i added some acrylic paint to the ones on the left and right.  i was going for a found on the forest floor look.

this afternoon i used a combo of alcohol inks, acrylics and stamps pads  to give these skull their aged and forest floor found look.

i think i like 'em.

i still like them bone white as well.  i think i will just let each project they will be used in dictate what i do to them.

i also used utee and regular embossing powder and a stamp to do this to a wooden bead

that is what the stamp looked like i was using to press in to the utee while it was still warm and workable to give the bead texture.

i also added a vintage stamp to a wee bottle.

i did not like the 'newness' of the cork so i aged it a bit with some ink.

wahlahhh....now it is ready to be used in a future assemblage/collage piece.

just one of the goodies i found while cleaning the studio....it is gonna be part of a necklace someday real soon...

i have been driving myself looney looking for these and found them....also to be part of a necklace soon, and a few other projects.

the photo stinks, i know.  i just wanted to snap a quickie to play some show-n-tell of a couple of goodies i have been working on.

i am loving working with the steel wire again.  i did not realized how much i missed it.

beads i have gathered for another necklace i am working on.   the darned big beads with what i thought were big big holes in them won't take the wire for my original idea.  seems the holes are much smaller in the middle.  so i am rethinking the 'stringing' process for this piece.

this is the focal for the necklace.  a locket that holds a toe bone from a wolf, or was it a coyote, that was hit by a car and did not survive....according to the etsy seller.

i am thinking of calling the piece the sacred bone.

i have used steel that i hammered and wrapped it a bit with sari silk.

i think that is about it.  i am sure i will think of a gazillion and a half more things i wanted to say or show-n-tell as soon as i hit the publish post button.

i am off to find something of the chocolate variety...wish me luck because i don't think we have anything.  maybe there will still be that swig of pumpkin spice milk.

i have missed you all.  big squishy hugs and sloppy kisses to you.

be back soon.
